Selective visibility is not secrecy. It is discernment. It is the intentional choice to share your interior life where it can be respected, understood, and held.

But psychologically, the ego is something much simpler, and far more necessary. The ego is the part of us that says “I.”

To make something new is to risk exposure. It invites uncertainty, misunderstanding, and the possibility of rejection. Even experienced artists encounter this tension.

Carl Jung described the shadow as the parts of ourselves that do not fit the image we prefer to hold. It is what we disown, not only traits we consider unacceptable, but also qualities that disrupt the identity we’ve constructed.

True development does not come from strengthening what we already prefer. It comes from expanding beyond it.
